Kawarau Falls Bridge
Recently opened this year is the new two lane Kawarau Falls Bridge, taking State Highway 6 south. This modern sweeping bridge will replace the old single lane bridge that runs across the top of the Kawarau Falls Dam. The dam was built in 1920 at a cost of £106,000 (equivalent to $10 million today), with the hope of holding the waters of the Wakatipu back long enough to expose unworked gold reefs downstream. Unfortunately water levels didn't fall far enough and returns on this scheme were modest at best.
This historic bridge will be maintained for cyclists and pedestrians only and will allow for long lingering looks into the crystal clear azure waters flowing below.
