Lower Shotover Conservation Area

Getting there

The Shotover Conservation Area Trail can be ridden in either direction and runs along the northern bank of the Kimi-ākau Shotover River between the bottom of Cardiac Climb (on the Countryside Trail) and just above the Kimi-ākau Bridge and the Shotover Gorge Trail.  The main access points are:

  • Old Lower Shotover Bridge - travel along the Countryside Trail for 1km and you will find the sign marking the start of the Lower Shotover Conservation Trail at the bottom of Cardiac Climb.

  • Tucker Beach - cross the Kimi-ākau Bridge, and follow the Shotover Gorge Trail switch backs up the hill to where the trail junction for Fitzpatrick Road and the Lower Shotover Conservation Area Trail link into the Shotover Gorge Trail

  • Fitzpatrick Road - follow the trail from Fitzpatrick Road down the hill to the trail junction of the Lower Shotover Conservation Area Trail and the Shotover Gorge Trail

There is parking available at all of the main access points.

The Lower Shotover Conservation Area Trail links to the Countryside Trail and the Shotover Gorge Trail.

Plan & prepare

The Lower Shotover Trail includes sections of Grade 5 Singletrack, and is suitable for walkers and experienced cyclists.

Part of the Lower Shotover Trail crosses the Kimi-ākau Shotover River bed.  The river bed section of the trail may not be accessible depending on river levels or during flood events.  Do not attempt to cross the river bed if it is under water.

The Lower Shotover Conservation area is a shared use area, there are lots of walkers as well as horse riders who use this trail - horses have right of way.

The Lower Shotover Conservation area includes areas that are nesting sites for the New Zealand Dotterel (Tūturiwhatu), dogs must be kept on a leash.

Respect Others

  • Keep left
  • Signal your approach to other trail users
  • Be courteous and give way to pedestrians
  • Slow down and stay in control of your bike
  • Keep dogs under control

Respect the Rules

  • Stay on the trail, do not enter private property
  • Leave gates as you find them
  • Do not disturb livestock or wildlife

Respect the Trails

  • Don't skid, cut corners or make new lines
  • Take your rubbish home
  • Be prepared (carry food, water, first aid, tools and warm clothes)

Share the Road

  • Stay left and follow the road rules
  • Ride predictably and signal your intentions
